yoga life drawing

yoga life drawing

Life drawing is about observing the human form and drawing the shapes it creates. Yoga creates beautiful shapes that are both challenging and fun to draw.

Illustrator and keen yogi, Kate Philipson, launched Yoga Life Drawing to bring both of her passions together - yoga and art.

Yoga Life Drawing is a workshop, led by Kate, where participants get the chance to draw a (fully clothed) yoga model striking amazing poses. Our model for this session is the lovely Lita Sattva, so we know the poses will be beautiful!

Like yoga, drawing is a moving meditation. So whether you are a professional artist or haven’t picked up a pen in years, life drawing is a great way to relax and unlock creativity.

Yoga Life Drawing is open to everyone - no artistic experience required. Art materials are provided but you are welcome to bring along your own.

The workshop will begin with a 30 minute yoga sequence, taught by Lita, to prepare your body and mind for drawing, so please bring clothes suitable for yoga. Yoga mats and props are provided.

Kate Philipson is a graphic illustrator from London. Check out her work on instagram @leopardslunch and follow @yogalifedrawing for regular YLD updates.

advancing with grace w/ David Kam & Nicolai Boas

How does the concept of grace come into play on the mat?

Explore soft, fluid movement transitions through dissecting the anatomy and kinesiology of the human physique. Specific techniques and alignment cues both within movement and static action will serve as theoretical entry points towards the internal practice of presence.

Join Nicolai and David in gracefully moving around the mat, tackling creative transitions even amongst the more advanced of poses.

£25

More about Nicolai…

Nicolai is a true technique junkie, and philosophy nerd.
His classes, workshops and trainings have a high focus on heightening the body awareness and ability within his students. Through personalised alignment and isometrical engagement principles in regards to physical support and foundation building, poses are transformed into an internal experience of body instead of only serving as an aesthetic point of direction. His practice bares clear inspiration from both classical asthanga vinyasa and anusara, yet hits of techniques from modern dance and different street styles often sneaks its way in to the practice.

For Nicolai it is important to empower his students in taking ownership and finding their personal practice through exploring classic as well as modern takes on yoga, yet there is no doubt for Nicolai about how Yoga comes to serve as a guiding principle of his life on and off the mat. It is the practice of reconnecting to the true self by confining personal reaction patterns and ways of sense making often through a physical and explorative practice.

Nicolai is normally found teaching at one of his studios in Copenhagen unless he is out visiting other studios or hosting retreats somewhere in the world, sharing his love and passion for yoga.

New Shoots – A Yin Yoga Workshop

New Shoots – A Yin Yoga Workshop

In this workshop Sasha will guide you through Yin postures that activate the energy pathways of the Liver and Gallbladder; which are associated with the energy of spring. It maybe snowing outside, but nature is starting to stir and awaken. We can harness this energy within ourselves to galvanise ourselves into action for the year ahead.

In Chinese medicine the Liver is called the General of the Army and when things are in balance, we have a clear vision for the future. The Gallbladder is the energetic partner of the Liver, which is associated with having courage to put the Livers’ vision into action.  Spring is associated with the element Wood and symbolised by the Willow tree that needs to be both strong and flexible, to bend with the winds. In Yin yoga we learn to yield, like the willow tree.

Yin yoga is a floor-based practice and non-dynamic. Yin is when we slowly ‘stress’ the deep fascia of the body with long held postures, which can help to release tension and work the energetic pathways, promoting both physical and emotional healing.

Join Sasha for an extended two-hour practice of Yin, gently guiding you through with an embodied knowledge, offerings of selected poetry, music and seasonal wisdom.

Sasha has been teaching yoga for six years and has trained in Yin yoga with Norman Blair and Bernie Clark. She assists Norman Blair on his teacher trainings through Yoga Campus at The Life Centre.

rest in sound w/ Adrianna Zaccardi & Junior Valentine

Join Adrianna, Kindred's resident Restorative Yoga teacher, and Gong Master Junior Valentine for this healing workshop - Rest in Sound.

With a combination of restorative yoga poses and sound healing through the use of gongs, drum, rain sticks, bowls, chimes and much more, Adrianna and Junior will create a safe, comfortable and held space for you to ultimately be with your truest state.

The various instruments are used as soothing and relaxing vibrational tools that create a sound massage for the mind, body and soul.  A Sound Bath literally ‘washes’ the recipient with a tsunami of sound and vibrations permitting a profound relaxation to take place. The healing effects of sound vibrations on the human body are scientifically proven, but nonetheless mysterious.

Restorative Yoga is a therapeutic practice that involves the use of props and the support of the earth to allow the nervous system to move into a state of rest and digest, bringing calm and relaxation to the mind and body.

This is an experience not to be missed.

mastering the splits w/ Nathalie Mukusheva

Hanumanasana or Splits is considered one of the more iconic and for some people unobtainable postures but its nothing more than a variation of standing postures like Parsvattonasna (Pyramid Pose), High Lunge and the Warriors.

This workshop will take a different approach to achieving this posture. As well as working on strengthening drills and active and passive stretches for hamstrings or hip flexors we will also look at the form of standing postures in depth and how they relate to floor based variations like low lunges and Anjaneyasana when gravity comes into play and the tendency to sink into the floor is greater.

Developing better form and building up strength in these areas will not only improve your standing poses but also enhance flexibility and proprioception as you work towards more advanced variations

All levels welcome

intro to kundalini yoga w/ Emma Down

0aad05e1-4f32-4b19-b17a-d9e230584d5b copy.jpg

If you like your physical exercise to come with a side of spiritual enlightenment, kundalini yoga might be for you.

Going to a class today feels so fresh, relevant and forward thinking, you would think it was a hybrid Eastern-Western concept developed specifically for the 21st Century.

‘Kundalini’ is an ancient Sanskrit word that literally means ‘coiled snake’. In early Eastern religion (long before Buddhism and Hinduism) it was believed that each individual possessed a divine energy at the base of the spine. This energy was thought to be the sacred energy of creation. This energy is something we are born with, but we must make an effort to ‘uncoil the snake’ thereby putting us in direct contact with the divine. Kundalini Yoga is the practice of awakening our Higher Self and turning potential energy into kinetic energy.

This form of yoga is a dynamic, powerful practice to establish and maintain an aligned relationship between the mind, body and spirit. Kundalini Yoga gives people the tools to optimise energy levels, restore vitality, strengthen the nervous system, balance the glandular system and (re)connect to our essential self. Classes include sequences of postures (kriyas), breath work, meditation, mudra hand positions and mantra.

This beginners workshop will give you the confidence to attend kundalini yoga classes and workshops. You can talk to Emma about starting your own daily practice and learn about simple techniques to enhance your everyday experience.

embodied yoga principles - deepening the practice

Embodied Yoga Principles is a simple and innovative approach to postural Yoga drawing from many embodied/somatic practices to emphasise psychological self-awareness, deep personal insight and to develop skill transference off of the Yoga mat. The ultimate aim being a better awareness of how you ARE in relation to yourself, those around you and the world at large.

This session will incorporate a 45 minute slow, accessible vinyasa flow followed by time working with achetypal postures, discussion with partners & in small groups and space to explore how these principles could be taken away and worked with.

While the session will be completely accessible regardless of physical ability, it may be quite deep. So if you are going through any emotional or psychological it may not be for you right now.

Come open and prepared to laugh, cry and rage, to see and potentially change some long held patterns for the better.

Tom Holmes is a Yoga & Qigong teacher based in South London drawing on a wealth of knowledge and experience within many embodied and spiritual practices to provide people with tools to live a more vibrant life.

Tom is currently training in the EYP methodology so this session will be offered on a donation basis, with all proceeds going to Thrive. Hamstrings can be a common source of frustration for many yoga practitioners. In this workshop we will look at why the hamstrings are so important to a fulfilling yoga practice and explore tips and tricks for healthy hamstring stretches.
The hamstrings are intimately connected to the health of the lower back and pelvis. Many back injuries and lower back pain issues are directly related to the hamstrings.

We will explore specific actions in yoga postures using drills and props to lengthen the hamstrings and open the back of the knees without overworking the ligaments and joints and then how to apply these actions in both Standing Poses and Forward Folds

Open to all levels of practitioners, this workshop will particularly benefit those who feel tight hamstrings hamper their practice and those who are hyper-extended in the knees.
